SD Mesa, Delta stay high on this week's State Women's Volleyball Top 25
San Diego Mesa continues to sweep opponents and stays on top of this week's CCCWVCA State Top 25 Rankings while San Joaquin Delta had a perfect 4-0 trip through top SoCal squads at the NorCal v. Showcase Showcase to take over the North #1 spot and #2 state rank.
The showcase proved to be very helpful for two South teams as new #5 Grossmont and #10 Bakersfield each excelled to climb higher in the rankings.
Meanwhile, the Big 8 Conference juggernaut of Delta, #3 American River and #4 Sierra are a combined 18-1.
Feather River (#6), Fresno City (#7), Mt. San Antonio (#8), and Pasadena City (#9) round out the top 10.
Thirteen teams still have undefeated records, including a far-improved #15 LA Mission at 6-0.
Seven new teams joined this week's Top 25 led by College of the Sequoias at #17.
- SAN DIEGO MESA, Pacific Coast Athletic, 4-0: The Olympians are not losing a beat from its amazing 9-0 sets run at last year's 3C2A state tourney as they swept Irvine Valley, Mt. San Antonio, and Ventura last week and have yet to lose a set in four overall victories. Jaiden Mojica dished out 103 assists and had 24 digs in the three most recent triumphs. - SAN JOAQUIN DELTA, Big 8, 6-0: The Mustangs went a perfect 4-0 at the NorCal v. SoCal Showcase. All-tourney selection Emily Vickers put on a clinic as she pounded 49 kills and landed 18 aces in wins over four SoCal squads. Delta climbs three spots. NorCal #1; Last Week's State Rank: 4
- AMERICAN RIVER, Big 8, 5-0: The Beavers stayed undefeated with 4-set wins over San Mateo, Sequoias and a sweep of West Valley. Morgan Castaneda was on fire again with 53 kills in scoring 20 or more points in each of the wins. ARC slides one rank. NorCal #2; Last Week's State Rank: 2
- SIERRA, Big 8, Big 8, 7-1: The Wolverines rode the play of State Player of the Week Paige Skinner in a 5-1 week that included a sweep over Feather River and 4-set win over Grossmont. The team's 6-0 start to the season was foiled in a 3-set loss to Bakersfield, but Sierra responded with a sweep over Pasadena City. The team drops one spot. NorCal: #3; Last Week's State Rank: 3
- GROSSMONT, Pacific Coast Athletic, 3-3: The Griffins impressed at the NorCal v. SoCal Showcase with a sweep over Feather River and 4-set win over Fresno City. Even in 4-set losses to Delta and Sierra, Grossmont took 1-0 leads in each match. Andrea Torres was also a State Player of the Week. Grossmont jumps five slots. SoCal #2; Last Week's State Rank: 10
- FEATHER RIVER, Golden Valley, 6-4: It was a 4-2 week and 3-1 showing in the showcase for the Golden Eagles, whose losses were in three sets each to Sierra and Grossmont, but sweeps over Cabrillo, Cypress, Pasadena and a 4-set triumph over Bakersfield. Lucy Ryan made All-Tourney and scored 66 kills for the week. FRC falls one slot. NorCal #4; Last Week's State Rank: 5
- FRESNO CITY, Central Valley, 5-1: The Rams had a strong start to the season with five victories, including three at its hosted NorCal v. SoCal Showcase. Fresno posted 4-set wins over Hartnell, Pasadena and Bakersfield, swept West Valley and Cypress with the only blemish its 4-set defeat v. a strong Grossmont squad. - MT. SAN ANTONIO, South Coast North, 5-1: The Mounties saw a 5-match win streak stopped by Mesa in three sets after a wild 5-set win over Santa Monica and a a sweep over Irvine Valley last week. Jordyn Romano had 17 kills and nine blocks at MB in the three matches. A 2-slot fall for Mt. SAC. SoCal: #3; Last Week's State Rank: 6
- PASADENA CITY, South Coast North, 3-4: The Lancers had a rocky 0-4 showing at the NorCal v. SoCal Showcase, but had close matches v. Fresno (98-91 points) in a 4-set defeat and played Delta tough in a 3-set loss (77-69). Pasadena beat Ventura on the road in four before traveling to Fresno. PCC's sweep over Grossmont in week 1 keeps it on the top 10. Biko Hollie was a showcase All-Tourney selection with 44 kills in four matches. SoCal #4; Last Week's State Rank: 9
- BAKERSFIELD, Western State South, 2-4: The Renegades surprised Sierra in three and took sets from the other three North powerhouses in the other three losses at the showcase. All-tourney choice Stevie Yursik bombed 61 kills with 32 digs and 11 aces in a dominating performance. A leap of six spots into the top 10 for Bakersfield. SoCal #5; Last Week's State Rank: 16
- LONG BEACH CITY, South Coast South, 3-0: The Vikings rallied from down 2-1 to get by Moorpark in five, then swept Canyons. Ryannah Gagau recorded 18 kills and 16 digs in the two matches. One spot up for LBCC. SoCal #6; Last Week's State Rank: 12
- ORANGE COAST, Orange Empire, 2-1: The Pirates scored a 4-set win over Ventura as Jordan Packer dished out 30 assists. OCC takes a community chest card for two spaces forward. SoCal #7; Last Week's State Rank: 14
- SOLANO, Bay Valley, 5-1: The Falcons won four in the week, including in five over Sequoias and Modesto in four. Vanessa Semien totaled 42 kills, 41 digs, and six aces. NorCal #6; Last Week's State Rank: 13
- SAN MATEO, Coast South, 1-1: The Bulldogs lost in four sets to American River. Alexis Rantar made 16 digs. CSM landed on chance and reversed three spaces. NorCal #7; Last Week's State Rank: 11
- LA MISSION, Western State North, 6-0: The Eagles swept Victor Valley, then rallied down 24-18 to stay undefeated in a wild 4-set affair v. Mt. San Jacinto (100-90 points, two extra point sets). Nereyda Cabrales posted 10 kills v. VVC. LAM goes up three slots. SoCal #8; Last Week's State Rank: 18
- MOORPARK, Western State North, 3-1: The Raiders followed a tough 5-set loss to Long Beach by sweeping Desert and Fullerton. Alesia Thomas powered 20 kills with 10 digs v. LBCC. MC slips one spot. SoCal #9; Last Week's State Rank: 15
- SEQUOIAS, Central Valley, 4-2: The Giants played well in both a 5-set defeat v. Solano and a a 4-set loss to American River (99-88, lost fourth 27-25). COS swept Folsom Lake and beat West Valley in four. NorCal #8; Last Week's State Rank: Unranked
- SANTA BARBARA CITY, Western State North, 5-1: The Vaqueros jumped into the rankings with a 4-0 week that included a 4-set win over Taft plus three decisive sweeps over Rio Hondo, Glendale and East Los Angeles, an average score per set of 25-12.4. Kaylin Cooney had 30 kills and nine blocks in the four wins. SoCal #10; Last Week's State Rank: Unranked
- SANTA MONICA, Western State South, 2-1: The Corsairs nearly defeated Mt. SAC, losing in five (110-102 points) and just 15-13 in the decider. SMC swept Cuyamaca and Cal Lutheran JV. Nicole Lankton ripped 41 kills in the three matches. SMC go up a slot. SoCal #11; Last Week's State Rank: 20
- TAFT, Central Valley, 4-0: The Cougars had a 7-match win streak stopped by SBCC in four, but nearly going five in a 27-25 fourth set. They beat Santa Rosa in four while sweeping Cerro Coso and East LA. Grace Witcher with a monster week that saw her total 65 kills, 48 digs and 10 aces. Taft falls three spots. - CERRITOS, South Coast South, 3-0: The Falcons edged Canyons in their season opener in five, then recorded strong sweeps over Santa Ana and Golden West as they leap on to this week's rankings. Sydney May blasted an amazing 20 kills in just 27 swings in the GW win (hit .630). She has 37 kills and 46 set assists in the three wins. SoCal #12; Last Week's State Rank: Unranked
- PALOMAR, Pacific Coast Athletic, 3-0: The Comets have come out of the gate soaring on sweeps over Saddleback and Mt. San Jacinto plus a 4-set win over El Camino as they reach the Top 25. - HARTNELL, Coast North, 3-3: The Panthers lost to Fresno in four, then swept Coaling and Butte while beating Folsom Lake in four as they find their way on to the rankings. Theresa Habrik set 124 assists in a 3-1 week. NorCal #10; Last Week's State Rank: Unranked
- MODESTO, Central Valley, 4-1: The Pirates had their 4-match win streak ended by Solano in four and swept both Merced and Cabrillo last week to join the Top 25. Alicia Souza tallied 35 kills in three contests. NorCal #11; Last Week's State Rank: Unranked
T25. VENTURA, Western State North, 1-3: The Pirates had a rough week with 4-set losses v. Pasadena and Orange Coast then a 3-set setback v. San Diego Mesa. Talia Behrens made 13 block kills in the three matches. It was a free fall for Ventura, dropping 17 spots. SoCal #14; Last Week's State Rank: 8
T25. RIVERSIDE CITY, Orange Empire, 4-1: The Tigers swept Pierce in their only match last week. Jaeda Whitmire scored nine kills. RCC descends four rungs on the ladder. SoCal #15; Last Week's State Rank: 21
