Feather River, Sierra, Fresno City stand out near top of CCCWVCA State Top 25 Rankings #5

As San Joaquin Delta maintains its #1 spot in the CCCWVCA State Top 25 Rankings #5, the other top three North teams have established some separation from the rest of the pack.

At #3, Feather River has had some up-and-down moments this year, but has survived some big tests with a 3-2 record in 5-set matches, including giving Delta its toughest match on Sept. 23 in a wild 26-24, 27-25, 19-25, 18-25, 15-7, defeat. The Golden Eagles actually outscored the Mustangs in total points in that contest, 106-105. 

At #4, Sierra has won all but two matches this year, both sweep defeats at the hands of FRC. However, the Wolverines also has a sweep over Feather River in the '23 season opener. Sierra won 11 of its last 12 matches and remain perfect in Big 8 Conference play at 5-0. They will surely see how far it has improved when they face Delta for the first of two conference meetings on Oct. 11. 

At #6, Fresno City's four losses all were against the other three top NorCal squads, twice v. Feather River, but showing a big improvement from their first loss (a sweep) by stretching the Golden Eagles to five in their second meeting, 12-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-27, 15-12, on Sept. 23. FCC also continues its amazing streak of success in the Central Valley Conference, with two more wins last week that extended their CVC streak to 165 matches dating back to the 2007 season. 

Meanwhile, besides Delta (14-0), #8 Long Beach City had an epic victory over #16 Pasadena City, 24-26, 25-21, 25-22, 28-30, 16-14, to stay undefeated at 12-0, while #2 San Diego Mesa is the other team still perfect at 14-0.

  3. FEATHER RIVER, Golden Valley, 14-4: The Golden Eagles did not play last week. Libero Katherine Gee (5.35 average) did receive a State Player of the Week #6 honors for her performances on Sept. 22-23. NorCal #2; Last Week's Ranking: #3
  4. SIERRA, Big 8, 14-2: The Wolverines ran their win streak to seven matches with a 4-set win over American River and a sweep of Cosumnes River. They are 5-0 in Big 8 play. Digs Leader: Sophia Guerrero, 5.50. NorCal #3; Last Week's Ranking: #4
  5. GROSSMONT, Pacific Coast Athletic, 12-1: The Griffins hold a 6-match win streak, sweeping Southwestern in their only match last week to move to 4-0 in PCAC play. Grossmont moves up one spot. Digs Leader: Avery Banaag, 3.67. SoCal #2; Last Week's Ranking: #6
  6. FRESNO CITY, Central Valley, 13-4: The Rams completed a 3-0 week by beating San Mateo in 4 after CVC wins over Sequoias (four) and Porterville (sweep). FCC is 5-0 in conference. They move up one slot. Digs Leader: Mia Dilley, 4.42. NorCal #4; Last Week's Ranking: #7
  7. IRVINE VALLEY, Orange Empire, 9-2: The Lasers downed Saddleback in 4 to move to 3-1 in OEC play. IVC climbs one step. Digs Leader: Audrey Fowler, 4.47. SoCal #3; Last Week's Ranking: #8
  8. LONG BEACH CITY, South Coast, 12-0: The Vikings score the 5-set W over Pasadena and a sweep of LA Harbor. They lead the SCC at 6-0. LBCC moves up a slot. Digs Leader: Kaylani Moncada, 3.74. SoCal #4; Last Week's Ranking: #9
  9. LASSEN, Golden Valley, 19-2: The Cougars have 12 sweeps this season, including over Cabrillo and Ohlone, increasing their state-leading wins total. They also inch up a spot. Digs Leader: Presley Burrows, 2.78. NorCal #5; Last Week's Ranking: #10
  10. VENTURA, Western State North, 11-2: The Pirates had a 6-match win streak stopped in a 4-set upset loss to rival Moorpark. They then swept LA Pierce. It's a 5-spot drop for Ventura. Digs Leader: Autumn Rojelio, 5.95. SoCal #5; Last Week's Ranking: #5
  11. AMERICAN RIVER, Big 8, 10-5: The Beavers followed their loss to Sierra by sweeping Folsom Lake. Digs Leader: Reese Ampi, 4.33. NorCal #6; Last Week's Ranking: #11
  12. SOLANO, Bay Valley, 13-5: The Falcons with eight sweeps and an 8-1 mark in their last nine (only blemish a 5-set L v. Feather River). They swept Siskiyous, Santa Rosa, then did the same to Los Medanos to open BVC play and extend their conference win streak to 48 matches (since 2018). They jump two spots.   13. ORANGE COAST, Orange Empire, 9-3: The Pirates scored a big 5-set win over Cypress (15-6), then swept Santa Ana. It's early-season win over Rio Hondo offsets its recent close loss to Mt.   14. CYPRESS, Orange Empire, 11-3: The Chargers are finding OEC play a challenge as they need five sets to get by Golden West (15-10) after their tough loss to Orange Coast, also in 5. It's a 2-spot drop for Cypress. Digs Leader: Jessica Ferreira, 2.97. SoCal #7; Last Week's Ranking: #12
  15. RIO HONDO, South Coast, 10-3: The Roadrunners continue their strong play with a sweep over East LA to extend their win streak to 6. They remain perfect in SCC play at 5-0. Digs Leader: Maria Bejines, 4.35. SoCal #8. Last Week's Ranking: #15
  16. PASADENA CITY, South Coast, 11-5: The Lancers nearly knocked off Long Beach in that 5-set thriller (outscored just 118-113) after a sweep over Los Angeles City. PCC makes a 2-spot climb. Digs Leader: Makayla Chiechi, 4.09. SoCal #9; Last Week's Ranking: #18

  21. SAN MATEO, Coast South, 4-6: The Bulldogs won a rematch over Cabrillo in 5 (15-11) after losing to the Seahawks in 5 on Sept. 9, then lost in 4 to #6 Fresno. A tough schedule that includes its win over #3 Feather River a month ago seems long ago. It's a 4-slot drop for CSM. NorCal #9; Last Week's Ranking: #17
  22. SANTA MONICA, Western State South, 10-5: The Corsairs have taken a wacky road in needing 5 sets to beat Citrus (15-10) after a sweep over West LA. They have an early win over Rio Hondo, took Ventura to 5 in an L, and have the 5-set W over SBCC. SMC moves up one slot. Digs Leader: Sophia Odle, 2.86. SoCal #13; Last Week's Ranking: #23
  23. GOLDEN WEST, Orange Empire, 7-3: The Rustlers are proving to be dangerous to opponents and nearly upset Cypress in a 5-set loss. GWC also swept Santiago Canyon.     T24. SANTA BARBARA CITY, Western State North, 8-8: The Vaqueros score a huge 5-set win over Moorpark and have won 5 of 6 to reach this week's rankings. They also beat LA Mission in 4.     T24. CERRITOS, South Coast, 7-3: The South Coast has never been stronger throughout than this year. The Falcons have an early sweep over Golden West, took #16 Pasadena to 5 and #8 LBCC to 4, and swept both El Camino and LA Harbor last week. Digs Leader: Priscilla Castillo, 4.85.     T24. MT. SAN JACINTO, Inland Empire Athletic, 12-4: The Eagles have their earlier win over Mt. SAC, have won 11 of 12 with their sweep over Desert in their IEAC opener.
