Delta Women's Basketball Coach Gina Johnson Collects Milestone Win #800
Rarely does a head coach in any sport put up the type of long-time accomplishments reached by San Joaquin Delta College women's basketball coach Gina Johnson. On Jan. 16, her Mustangs downed Diablo Valley, 94-22, and that victory was her milestone 800th at the California Community College level.
In her 33rd season, 29 at Delta after her first four seasons at Foothill College in (1992-96), Johnson became just the second head coach to reach 800 victories, joining a short list with Ventura legend Ned Mircetic, who is still going in his 35th season at Ventura College. Mircetic is the all-time wins leader at currently 935 victories.
Johnson's teams have made the postseason in each of her first 28 seasons at Delta and are likely to make it 29 straight this season with her squad at 16-4 and tied for first place in the Big 8 Conference race.
After Foothill, Johnson joined the Mustangs family in the 1996-97 season and immediately paid dividends with a then Bay Valley Conference title.
Johnson's run at Delta includes the following:
- 15 conference championships, including 9 straight between 2001-2009
- 4 State Runner-Up finishes in 2006, 2009, 2014, 2022
- 15 Final 8 appearances
- 3 times named NorCal Coach of the Year in 2002, 2015, 2020
- Inducted into the Stockton Hall of Fame in 2024
Johnson's one missing piece on her trophy mantel is a 3C2A state championship, something that appeared to be destiny in the 2019-20 season when her Mustangs were 29-1. Carrying a 22-game win streak into the Elite 8 Tournament, it was the start of the pandemic that abruptly ended that season and the tourney, then eventually cancelling for everyone the 2020-21 season.
In her tenure at Delta, one of Johnson's proudest statistics is a remarkable 97 percent graduation rate and transfer of her student-athletes to unversities.
