Mt. SAC sneaks by SBVC 56-54 in regional semifinal
The Wolverines (19-7) stormed back from a first-half deficit and led by as many as seven, 51-44 with 4:02 left. The visitors were up 51-48 when their leader departed and the Mounties (27-4) were able to seize the momentum.
"That was definitely a turning point," conceded Mt. SAC coach Brian Crichlow. "Summer is a great player and she really hurt us with her driving and penetrating to the basket. We did a pretty good job on her in the first half, but she really turned it on in the second half."
It was a frantic last few minute for the Wolverines, who turned the ball over four times the rest of the game. One of those came seconds after Ramsey's departure, and the Mounties got within one at 51-50 on a pair of free throws by Sashanique Youngblood.
The Wolverines didn't help themselves when they had earlier chances. Norissa Sanders, who was huge for the visitors all night, missed an uncontested layup on the Wolverines' next possession.
SBVC also made just one of four free-throw attempts in the last two minutes.
"Ball-handling has been our weakness all year," SBVC coach Sue Crebbin said. "It showed there. But we didn't capitalize when we had chances. A layup here, a free throw there."
SBVC still led 54-52 with 1:13 to go, but the Mounties evened it with 48 seconds left on a driving layup by Tahniya Sweatt. The final points came at the line, with Youngblood making one of two tries with 32 seconds left and Sweatt adding another with five seconds to play.
SBVC tried to get even and rushed the ball up the court, but a jumper from the corner by Sanders was no good.
Sanders and Ramsey combined for 39 points. Sanders, who had 20, also snagged 14 rebounds.
SBVC shot 37.3 percent (19 for 51) but was a woeful 19.2 percent (5 for 26) in the first half. It ended up with 21 turnovers.
Mt. SAC got 13 from Sabrina Norton, 12 from Sweatt and 11 from Youngblood. It shot 27.1 percent (16 for 59) and was undone by 24 turnovers. It ended up with a 42-37 advantage on the boards.
