NORWALK – Sabrina Norton poured in 11 of her team-high 15 points in the second half to will the defending state champion Mt. San Antonio College (MSAC) Mounties to a 51-47 win over the San Joaquin Delta College (SJDC) Mustangs in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) semifinal #1 Friday evening (Mar. 14) at Falcon Gymnasium on the campus of Cerritos College.
Norton, a sophomore forward from Issaquah (WA) HS, scored nine consecutive points to give MSAC 41-42 lead with 5:54 to play. After San Joaquin Delta regrouped to take a 46-42 lead with 4:20 left, the Mounties went on a 9-0 run for a 51-46 lead with 1:37 to play. From there, the Mounties ran out the clock as much as possible and hung on for the win. Norton had a game-high 11 rebounds for MSAC.
With the win, Mt. San Antonio (29-4), the No. 2 seed from Southern California, advances to Sunday's championship game against the winner of Friday's other semifinal between Ventura and Fresno City.
San Joaquin Delta (27-6), the No. 1 seed from Northern California, overcame a scoreless streak of 9:24 when it went scoreless for the final 4:17 of the first half and failed to score in the first 5:07 of the second stanza. The Mustangs were led by freshman guard Selina Moore (Galt / Liberty Ranch HS) who had a game-high 16 points.
