SAN MATEO -- After sweeping both state regional baseball opening round games with visiting Merced, College of San Mateo has advanced to the second round of the California Community College Athletic Association playoffs. The Coast Golden Gate champion Bulldogs (26-11) will visit Santa Rosa JC (28-10) for a best two of three series, Friday through Sunday, May 8-10. Games are schedule for 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with Sunday’s third game, if needed, at 12 noon. The fifth seeded Bulldogs made short work of No. 12 Merced College, winning 12-3 on Friday and 6-1 on Saturday.

SAN MATEO -- After sweeping both state regional baseball opening round games with visiting Merced, College of San Mateo has advanced to the second round of the California Community College Athletic Association playoffs. The fifth seeded Bulldogs made short work of No. 12 Merced College, winning 12-3 on Friday and 6-1 on Saturday.
In Saturday's decider, San Mateo got the go-ahead run in the fourth inning when Ryann Krainz singled home Bradley Degnan from second. Degnan had singled to lead-off the frame and then stole second base.
San Mateo took control with two more runs in the next inning. Singles by Degnan and Makana Lyman brought home Devin Mahoney and Dylan Isquira.
Mahoney, in his first pitching start, went the distance, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out three – retiring the last ten batters he faced. Usually a reliever, Mahoney improved to 5-1 on the season. At the plate he went 2-for-2, including a double, scored twice, and had an RBI.
Miles Mastrobuoni went 3-for-4, including 2 doubles and a triple, including an RBI. Degnan and Lyman each had a pair of hits.
--San Mateo has won six of its last seven games and 13 of 16 since March 21.
Merced finished 23-15.
--Santa Rosa is the No. 4 seed in Northern California, finishing as runner-up in the Big 8 conference behind state top-ranked and No. 1 seed San Joaquin Delta (35-4).
