Ryan Krainz broke up a tight game with a three-run triple during a six-run fourth inning as College of San Mateo smacked visiting Merced College, 12-3, in a first round California Community College Athletic Association baseball playoff game Friday. The two teams will meet again Saturday at 11 a.m. in the best two of three series. A doubleheader will be played, if needed. Undefeated pitcher Sam Hellinger got his eighth victory, striking out four and giving up three earned runs over 7 2/3 innings. Brian Ransom closed it out.

Undefeated pitcher Sam Hellinger got his eighth victory, striking out four and giving up three earned runs over 7 2/3 innings. Brian Ransom closed it out.
CSM loaded the bases with no outs in the first two innings and finally capitalized in the second frame on sacrifice flies by Krainz and Austin Lonestar for a 2-0 lead. After Merced scored single runs in the third and fourth frames to tie it, Krainz gave the Bulldogs the lead for the second – and final – time with his bases loaded triple with no outs in the fourth. Miles Mastrobuoni then had a double and scored on a triple by Juan Gonzalez.
Krainz had four RBIs in the game and scored twice. Mastrobuoni had three hits, including two doubles.
Devin Mahoney had a three-run homer in the eighth. Lonestar had two hits and two RBIs. Bradley Degnan had two hits and scored twice.
Coast Golden Gate champion CSM, seeded fifth in Northern California, is now 26-11. No. 12 Merced of the Central Valley Conference fell to 23-14. CSM had the only double digit score tally in Northern California the first day of the playoffs.
