PASO ROBLES - The best of the best in California community college women’s golf have made their way to Paso Robles for the 2023 3C2A Women’s Golf State Championships, which tees of on Monday and Tuesday at Hunter Ranch Golf Course.
In the south, it was the Mounties of Mt. San Antonio College who come in flying high after their impressive performance at the Southern California Regionals last week at Simi Hills Golf Club. Mt. SAC was a full 22 shots clear of the field after shooting a two-round total of 628.
Joining Mt. SAC in Paso Robles from the south include Moorpark (650), College of the Canyons (652) and Fullerton (662).
A familiar face will be making a return trip to the big dance … defending state champion Cathilyn Lee. The Fullerton College standout played her best golf of the season last week at Simi Hills with back-to-back, under-par rounds and finished with a combined 3-under-par score of 139. Orange Empire Conference champion Kianna Glossner was three back of Lee with an even-par 142, while third-place went to Bakersfield’s Maci Mills, who shot the low round of the regionals in Round 1 with a 3-under, 68 and finished with a 143, equaling College of the Desert’s Lehapi Taungahihifo two-round score.
Up in the north, it was the Modesto Junior College Pirates who carried the flag to the finish line at the Northern California Regionals with a two-round team score of 650 at Yolo Fliers Golf Club in Woodland. Joining the Pirates from the north will be Reedley College (668), Sierra (714) and Sacramento City (726).
While the numbers appear to favor a SoCal team, all bets are off under the pressures of the State Championships.
The Modesto Pirates are the defending state champs after shooting a final-round 316 to edge Canyons by just two shots for the team title.
Sophomore Mikaella Manto, who was on last year’s state championship team, led the Pirates’ return to the finals after shooting back-to-back scored of 78 for a two-day total of 156.
Reedley College’s Ethel Asequia was the low shooter at the NorCal Regionals after shooting a 73-75-148, eight shots clear of Manto’s runner-up 156.
The 3C2A Women’s Golf State Championships will get underway on Monday at 9:45 a.m. at Hunter Ranch, which will play 5,424 yards and is a par-72. Day 2 will also get underway at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
