West Hills edges Yuba 24-14 in NCFC American Division Bowl
The Yuba College football team battled but came up short in a tough 24-14 loss to host West Hills-Coalinga in the in the inaugural Northern California Football Conference American Division Bowl on Saturday.
"We moved the ball up and down the field; We just made some young, anxious mistakes and didn't get it in," said 49ers offensive coordinator Tomas Rodriguez. "They had only two possessions in the second half, so we had a shot."
Trailing 10-0 in the second quarter, the 49ers (6-5) got on the scoreboard when Tony Wright returned a blocked field goal 80 yards for a touchdown to make it a 10-7 game at halftime.
The Falcons (10-1) returned a Yuba fumble for touchdown to add to their lead in the third quarter before 49ers quarterback DaTwon Melvin hooked up with Dylan Campbell for a 31-yard TD pass to make the score 17-14 heading into the fourth.
West Hills pushed across the final touchdown with 11:41 remaining and held off Yuba's offense late to finish off the win.
Melvin finished with 189 yards passing and 38 yards rushing to take home Offensive Player of the Game honors.
Leroy Wilson added 99 yards on the ground, and Dorian Ferrell had 79 yards receiving for the 49ers, who controlled the ball for more than 38 minutes of the game.
