Fullerton Caps Perfect Season in Sudden Death Overtime

Sacramento, CA — The Fullerton College Women's Water Polo team capped off a perfect season on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets knocked off South #2 Riverside City College 8-7 in sudden death overtime to cap a perfect 35-0 season, and win the 2014 California Community College Athletic Association Women's Water Polo State Championship.
It was a defensive battle from the jump. Riverside scored the games first goal when Alia McMorris found the back of the net with 2:09 left in the first. That would be the only score by either school in the first quarter. In the second, the scoring picked up with Riverside scoring twice more, and Fullerton three times, including a score by Destiny Hernandez with 1:02 left in the half to make it 3-3 as the game headed into the break.
Riverside would keep the Hornets off the board in the third quarter, getting a goal by Brandi Carroll to give the Tigers a 4-3 edge headed into the fourth. Riverside would extend their lead to two goals with a score a little more than a minute into the fourth, but back to back goals by Hernandez and Gabriela Perez tied the match up at 5-5 with 4:25 left in regulation. Fullerton would take their first lead of the game when Hernandez struck again with 2:35 to go, but Riverside tied it up with 1:08 to go forcing overtime as the last couple of trips up the pool didn't result in another score.
In the first overtime the Hornets jumped back out in front, but the Tigers came right back on their next trip down and knotted it back up at seven all. In the second overtime, both teams came up empty forcing the third and sudden death overtime period. With 33 seconds left in the third overtime, when Perez scored the game winner.
