Saddleback College Sports Information
The Saddleback women's soccer team entered the game on Tuesday with Golden West College having tied two straight games and needing a win in the worst of ways. The Gauchos got what they wanted when Devin Scelsi scored the lone goal of the game midway through the second half.
Saddleback hadn't won a game since September 26 after draws against Cypress last Tuesday and Santa Ana last Friday. The Gauchos looked as if they may be headed towards a third straight draw deep into the game as Golden West and the Saddleback remained scoreless.
The Gauchos finally broke the ice when the freshman from Santa Margarita netted her second goal of the season in the 75th minute. Scelsi slammed home a rebound off Rustler keeper Sasham Green for the loan goal of the game on a day when game-time temperatures hovered around 90 degrees.
Saddleback then held on for dear life as Golden West outshot the Gauchos 19-6 for the game. Alexandria Scott was flawless in the nets, stopping all six shots on goal the Rustlers could fire her way, five of which came in the second frame.
The win moved Saddleback (7-1-2, 3-1-2) into third place in the Orange Empire Conference, one point in front of inter-district rival Irvine Valley College. The two schools will meet on Friday at Irvine Valley in a key OEC battle. Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM.
