SOLVANG – On a day where the elements were against everyone, three teams pulled ahead of the pack on Day 1 of the 3C2A Women’s Golf State Championships on Sunday at the River Course at the Alisal.
Reedley College and Orange Coast College finished their opening rounds tied for first with matching team scores of 323, one shot ahead of Modesto’s 324. College of the Canyons sits in fourth place at 344, followed by Mt. San Antonio (352), Sierra (361), Santa Barbara (361), Napa (363) and Allan Hancock (368).
With even MORE rain set for tomorrow, the already water-logged course will be pushed to its limit, as will the 64 golfers in the field, trying to overcome conditions not seen throughout the season.
These conditions didn’t slow down Reedley College’s Tessa Hernandez or College of the Canyons’ Sahya Kitabatake, who each scored an even-par 72 to lead the field through the first 18 holes. Hernandez matched up her three bogeys with three bogeys over a steady opening round, while Kitabatake – last year’s state individual champion – took advantage of the par-3s and birdied 3-of-4 to highlight her even-round performance.
OCC, this year’s Orange Empire Conference champions, used its impressive depth to score four of its golfers in the top 20, including Sofia Ingle in 6th (78), Michelle Khin in 7th (79), Sophie Thibodeau in 13th (82) and Nalani Sam in 18th (84).
For the Modesto Pirates, Sydney Streeter finished third on Day 1 after carding a 4-over-par, 76, with teammates Aaliyah Martinez (79), Lilly Garza (84), Angelina Cruz (85) and Olivia Machado (85) close behind.
Other top Reedley Tiger scores were turned in by Marissa Martin (82), Sarah Randolph (83), and Kailey Cuevas (86).
Despite the weather, several other golfers turned in top-10 performances for their opening rounds, including San Joaquin Delta’s Alyssa Quilao (76), Santa Barbara’s Aidie Smith (77), Sacramento City’s Tegas Syverson (78), Taft’s Faith Hamstreet (80) and Cuyamaca’s Emma Rahn (80).
Day 2 of the 3C2A Women’s Golf State Championships will begin on Monday at 9:30 a.m.
