Jerrene Richardson netted a 3-point basket to give Reedley College a 53-50 lead with 2:34 left in the game and those proved to be the winning points (and last field goal) as the visiting Tigers scored a 57-51 win over host College of San Mateo in the featured opening round game of the Tom Martinez Women’s Basketball Invitational Friday night.

REEDLEY TAKES LEAD ON LAST FIELD GOAL; BEATS CSM IN TOM MARTINEZ WOMEN'S BSK INV

 

SAN MATEO -- Jerrene Richardson netted a 3-point basket to give Reedley College a 53-50 lead with 2:34 left in the game and those proved to be the winning points (and last field goal) as the visiting Tigers scored a 57-51 win over host College of San Mateo in the featured opening round game of the Tom Martinez Women's Basketball Invitational Friday night.

 

CSM failed to connect on several scoring opportunities over the final two minutes while Reedley wrapped up the game at the foul line.

 

Mariah Elzy had a double-double of dozens for the Bulldogs with 12 points (8 in the final quarter) and 12 rebounds. Corryne Millett had eight points and 11 rebounds as the two 6-foot front liners helped CSM dominate the boards with 39 grabs. Millett also had five assists. Donimique Bonaparte had eight points and six steals.

 

San Mateo trailed by 11 points, 21-10, early in the second quarter, 21-10. Then Millett and Elzy led the Bulldogs on a 10-point run to close the gap to a point.  Reedley led, 26-24, at halftime.

 

Gabby Jejeh sank the first of her three triple pointers to start the second half and give San Mateo only its second lead since the game opening basket, 27-26. There were six more ties and nine more lead changes before the contest ended.          

 

San Mateo (4-5) plays Butte (1-8) at 3 p.m. on Saturday in a consolation semifinal. Butte dropped a back-and forth game to Merritt, 60-58, on Friday. In the other bracket, tourney favorite San Joaquin Delta (8-3) beat Santa Monica, 92-662, and Contra Costa topped Shasta, 75-52. Those winners play at 5 p.m. on Saturday and the losers meet at 1 p.m. Butte faces Merritt (5-6) at 7 p.m.

Contra Costa 75, Shasta 52

 

Saturday pairings: Consolation semifinals: Santa Monica (6-5) vs. Shasta (5-6), 1 p.m.

San Mateo (4-5) vs. Butte (1-8), 3 p.m.

Championship semifinals: Delta (8-3) vs. Contra Costa (4-6), 5 p.m.

Merritt (5-6) vs. Reedley (5-5), 7 p.m.
