CCCAA STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS March 11, 2016 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MT. SAC GETS BY FRESNO, 75-66; TO MEET SOUTH COAST RIVAL ELA FOR CCCAA WOMEN'S TITLE SUN.
LIVERMORE -- Jonnae Vermillion had 18 points and ten rebounds to lead No 1 South seed Mt. San Antonio College to its 24th straight women's basketball victory, 75-66, over No. 2 North Fresno City College in the semifinals of the California Community College Athletic Association tournament at Las Positas College. Caira Benton added 17 points and a game-high 12 boards.
Mt. SAC (33-1) will seek its seventh state championship Saturday at 1 p.m. against South Coast North Conference rival and first time finalist East Los Angeles (24-9).
The Mounties led throughout and appeared to be breezing to victory, leading 57-41 after three quarters. But the Rams (29-3) woke-up late, starting the final period with an 8-point run. They made it a one-point game, 64-63, with 3:50 left on a field goal by Jasmine Black, who was the game's high scorer with 21 points.
"I knew they were gonna go on a run," said Mt. San Antonio coach Brian Crichlow. "It was inevitable. They were too good of a team to just lay down and just let somebody beat them. It was just a matter of when the run was gonna happen. In their favor it happened down the stretch."
Vermillion, a first-team all-state selection, then led an 8-point Mt. SAC run to make-it 72-63 with a minute to play.
"We were able to keep our composure and made a big basket when they cut it to one," said Crichlow. "We were able to breathe a little bit and relax a little bit, and put 'em away with good tempo."
Five Mounties scored in double figures. Tahniya Sweatt had 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
Gina Henderson had 12 points and Alize' Lofton had 11 points.
"We had a tremendous effort tonight, and I think that's what carried us over," said Crichlow. "We didn't always do the right things, but we played hard and we competed. We stuck to the course. We stuck to our game plan and we did a good job."
Toni Edwards had 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists for Fresno.
Mt. San Antonio beat East Los Angeles twice in South Coast play, 82-72, and 82-60.
Mt. SAC most recently won back-to-back state titles in 2012 and 2013.
