ELZY STARS BUT DEPLETED LADY BULLDOGS LOSE AT HOME FOR FIRST TIME,
78-72, TO COAST NORTH LEADER CCSF
SAN MATEO -- An outstanding double-double by Mariah Elzy wasn't quite enough as the College of San Mateo women's basketball team lost for the first time at home this season, 78-72, to Coast North Conference leader City College of San Francisco Wednesday evening.
CSM's 6-1 center Corryne Millet was knocked out of the game with an elbow to the head under the basket late in the third quarter while working for a follow-up shot during an 8-point Bulldogs run that narrowed their deficit to just two points, 57-55. The foul on the play left Millet on the ground for several minutes before she departed to the bench for the remainder of the game, holding an ice bag on her forehead.
Elzy was the game high scorer with 22 points, plus 18 rebounds and three assists. Millet left with five points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Megan Pham had 15 points and three rebounds. Taylor Cormier had nine points, four rebounds, and three assists.
CSM (11-5, 0-2 Coast North) trailed, 58-55 at the third quarter break and stayed in contention in the final period, at 68-71 with 2:49 left. An ensuing 5-point CCSF run made it 76-68 with 48 seconds remaining. That was too much for the Bulldogs to overcome -- despite eight final period points by Elzy, who played with a bruised back.
The Bulldogs finished the game with only seven players left in the lineup. "I'm proud of them for stepping out and bouncing back," said CSM coach Michelle Warner. "We did make too many mistakes."
There were a dozen lead changes in the first two periods. San Francisco (16-3, 3-0) took the lead for good at 33-32 on a field goal by Brianna Deckman, 6:42 before halftime.
NEXT: San Mateo will host Las Positas (12-7, 1-2) Friday at 5:30 p.m. Las Positas lost to defending state champion Chabot, 65-44, Wednesday.
