Pirates' Late Push Puts Them In Sunday's Championship Game

NORWALK – The three-point field goal shooting of Dre Vega and rebounding of Adrianne Sloboh propelled the Ventura College (VC) Pirates to an 87-73 semifinal win over the Fresno City College (FCC) Rams in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Women's Basketball Championships Friday evening (Mar. 14) at Falcon Gymnasium on the campus of Cerritos College.
Ventura (31-3), the No. 1 seed from Southern California, trailed, 46-43, with 16:27 to play before back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore guard Cynthia Hernandez (Ventura / Buena HS) gave the Pirates the lead for good at 49-47 with 15:32 to play. Hernandez had 18 points, including 11 in the second half.
Vega, a sophomore guard from Oxnard (Pacifica HS) made four three-pointers in a five-minute stretch to extend Ventura's cushion to 77-63 with 4:21 to play. Vega finished with 20 points. Sophomore guard Lisa Marie Sanchez (Bakersfield / Centennial HS) pumped in a team-high 26 points on nine-of-14 shooting, including a perfect four-of-four on threes. The Pirates converted 14 of 33 treys (42.2%).
Sloboh, a sophomore forward from Simi Valley (Royal HS) pulled down a game-high 23 rebounds, including 13 in the second half, to keep the Rams at bay.
At halftime, Fresno City (29-4) led, 39-38. The Rams were paced by sophomore guard Keyora Wharry (Fresno / Edison HS) who had a game-high 32 points and team-high 16 rebounds.
With the win, Ventura will face the defending state champion Mt. San Antonio College (MSAC) Mounties in the state championship game on Sunday, Mar. 16, at 1 p.m. In 2002, Ventura defeated MSAC, 63-59, for the state championship. Ventura will be making its ninth appearance in the title game, while MSAC will be making its seventh.

Sabrina Norton poured in 11 of her team-high 15 points in the second half to will the defending state champion Mt. San Antonio College (MSAC) Mounties to a 51-47 win over the San Joaquin Delta College (SJDC) Mustangs in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) semifinal #1 Friday evening (Mar. 14) at Falcon Gymnasium on the campus of Cerritos College.
Norton, a sophomore forward from Issaquah (WA) HS, scored nine consecutive points to give MSAC 41-42 lead with 5:54 to play. After San Joaquin Delta regrouped to take a 46-42 lead with 4:20 left, the Mounties went on a 9-0 run for a 51-46 lead with 1:37 to play. From there, the Mounties ran out the clock as much as possible and hung on for the win. Norton had a game-high 11 rebounds for MSAC.
With the win, Mt. San Antonio (29-4), the No. 2 seed from Southern California, advances to Sunday's championship game against the winner of Friday's other semifinal between Ventura and Fresno City.
San Joaquin Delta (27-6), the No. 1 seed from Northern California, overcame a scoreless streak of 9:24 when it went scoreless for the final 4:17 of the first half and failed to score in the first 5:07 of the second stanza. MSAC led, 30-24, at halftime. The Mustangs were led by freshman guard Selina Moore (Galt / Liberty Ranch HS) who had a game-high 16 points.
