Saddleback softball off to historic start
MISSION VIEJO - The Saddleback softball team is 13-2 heading into a double-header at San Diego Mesa College on Friday. It is the best start for the program since 2010 and ties the second-best start in program history through 15 games.
Saddleback currently has the No. 4 Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) in Southern California and is No. 17 in the state in the Massey Ratings. The Bobcats entered the week ranked No. 9 in Southern California and No. 17 in the state in the latest California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association (3CFCA) Poll.
Saddleback’s start ties the second best in program history after a 1987 team that started 14-1 through 15 games before going on to finish 38-11 in winning the only state title in program history. The 13-2 start ties the 2010, 1999, and 1998 seasons for the second-best start overall through 15 games.
Saddleback is 8-2 so far against programs ranked in the top 20 in the Southern California Regional RPI, including a win against the team with the top RPI in the region, Palomar College.
“We’re just trying to learn and get better every day,” first-year coach head coach Krysten Fisher said. “We have a lot of enthusiasm right now, and that’s a good thing to have on your side.”
Saddleback is looking to qualify for the 3C2A Southern California Regional Tournament for the first time since 2015. The Bobcats will start Orange Empire Conference play next week.
