FULLERTON, Calif. - Two Orange Empire Conference powerhouses fought it out in the California Community College Athletic Association semi-finals with the No. 2 seed Orange Coast College Pirates holding off the No. 3 Irvine Valley College Lasers in a four games during the CCCAA Men's Volleyball Championship semifinals at Fullerton College Thursday night.
The Pirates (20-2 overall) came in to the match as the Orange Empire Conference champion and took care of business when push came to shove after suffering only one game loss to beat a tough Laser team 25-19, 21-25, 25-16, 25-20 advancing to the CCCAA State Championship final this Saturday, April 28th at 7:00 p.m. They will face off against No. 4 L.A. Pierce College (13-6 overall), who stunned top-seeded Long Beach City College in the early semifinal match in three straight sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-19).
OCC, the 2017 defending state champions, played very well as a team with a strong attack to grab the win. Kyle McCauley had a big night bringing down 21 kills with 8 digs to lead the team. Bradley Hankus chipped in with 11 kills, while Wyatt Henderson and Clark Steel had 9 each. Will Donald added 8 kills, and Colby Elder came through with 41 assists.
Irvine Valley's successful season came to an end with a 16-6 overall record. Patrick Furlong led the team with 13 kills and 10 digs. Matt August had 12 kills and 6 blocks. Austin McBain led the team in assists with 29.
Orange Coast, returns to the state championship final for the second consecutive year and looks to add an eighth state title banner to their rafters.
