The College of Marin men's soccer team qualified as one of 14 teams from the North Region in the Junior Cllege State Playoffs on Tuesday. The Mariners (9-6-4, 7-5-0 Bay Valley Conference) advance to face third-seeded West Valley College (15-1-4) on the road at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The Mariners haven't made it to the state playoffs in recent years but came on strong this year behind new coach Swap Mushiana and had a host of Marin-based players on the roster. Tam's Julien Melendez (11 goals), Terra Linda's Allan Estrada (four goals, 11 assists) and Novato's Jonny Villeda (six goals) were among the team's offensive leaders. Jose Martinez led the way with team-high totals in goals (14) and assists (12).
A four-game winning streak late in the season proved pivotal for the Mariners, picking up wins against Napa Valley, Merrit College, Mendocino and Folsom Lake.
Melendez scored in all four games for the Mariners, including braces against Mandocino and Folsom Lake. Martinez had two goals and four assists during the win streak. Former Redwood standout Will Finnie had two shutouts in goal.
