Try as they might to downplay it, coach Doug Cornelius and the Yuba College men's basketball team had something to prove against visiting Merritt College of Oakland on Wednesday night.
Though the 49ers have taken home the last seven Bay Valley Conference titles, it was the Thunderbirds who made the deeper run in the CCCAA playoffs last season when they made it all the way to the state's Final Four.
