FRESNO - Dominick Pisano's infield single with the bases loaded and the infield drawn in with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted San Joaquin Delta to a thrilling 7-6 win over Mt. San Antonio in a first-round game at the California Community College Athletic Association Baseball Championship Tournament at John Euless Ballpark on Saturday night.
The win, which came after the Mustangs (41-8) took a 5-0 lead only to have the Mounties rally to tie the game, sends Delta into Sunday's championship semifinals at 2 p.m. against Big 8 Conference rival Sacramento City. Mt. San Antonio will have a quick turnaround and face Orange Coast at 10 a.m. in an elimination game. Sacramento City beat the Pirates, 6-4, in Saturday's first game.
The teams in Saturday's nightcap combined to give the fans plenty of thrills during the final two innings. In the top of the eighth, Mt. SAC loaded the bases with two outs and nearly took a huge lead when Ryon Knowles slammed reliever Raul Rizo's offering to deep right. However, right-fielder Trent North went back to the wall, an estimated 350 feet from home plate, and reached up to get the final out.
The top of the ninth brought more defensive gems from the Mustangs when catcher Thomas Greely, who came in to spell starter Bryon Rosario early in the eighth, threw out two runners; the first on Brandon Bradshaw's attempted swipe of third and the other at second when he picked off Chris Sandberg.
A leadoff walk to Anthony Lucchetti gave Delta life in the bottom of the ninth while North's subsequent sharp grounder to short was misplayed by Elijah Zaragoza, putting runners at the corners with no outs. Pinch-hitter Bubba Dentoni was intentionally walked, leading to Pisano's game-winning grounder to the right side.
The exciting finish capped a thrilling game that saw Delta erupt for five runs in the third. A triple by Beau Philip to start the inning was followed by back-to-back doubles from Jordan Vujovich and Zack Mathis to stake the Mustangs to a 2-0 lead. Jack Walsh's double to right later in the frame scored two while Pisano's sacrifice fly capped the surge.
Zaragoza singled up the middle in the fifth to bring in the Mounties' first run while Quinn Cotter's two-run double and Ray Mata-Lemos' sacrifice fly in the sixth helped make it 6-4. Michael Sandoval had a sac fly in the seventh and Bradshaw singled to left for another run as Mt. SAC tied the game, 6-6.
Vujovich, Mathis, Jake Cruce and Pisano each had two hits for Delta while Cotter and Zaragoza each had a pair for the Mounties. Nick Dentoni (2-1) pitched the ninth to get the win while Steven Ordorica (6-2) suffered the loss.
San Joaquin Delta won two of three games against Sacramento City during Big 8 play this season but the Panthers won the most recent matchup, 8-6 in 10 innings, on March 4.
