SAN MATEO – Brad Degnan and Nick Adgar each banged out three hits as College of San Mateo rolled to a 16-3 baseball victory over visiting Solano College Thursday. Right fielder Degnan had a pair of triples and two RBIs and scored four runs. Leftfielder Adgar had two doubles and four RBIs and scored a run.
Not to be outdone by the CSM softball team (which scored 26 runs in its first two games), the San Mateo baseball team has now scored 29 runs in its first two wins. The baseball team leads the state in scoring (14.5 average) and runs batted (14.0).
Catcher Juan Gonzalez slammed CSM's first home run of the season in the third inning, scoring Adgar -- who had just doubled in Mike Riesner with the eventual winning run.
Solano scored an unearned run in the top of the first. So CSM actually had to come from behind for the victory. The Bulldogs answered with a 16-run onslaught, starting with three runs in the second inning. Degnan's two RBI triple began the scoring. It was 16-1 after six frames.
Starter Brock Tsukamoto got the win, allowing just one hit over three innings. Six other San Mateo hurlers pitched single innings. CSM coach Doug Williams was able to get two dozen players into the game.
STATE SLUGGING LEADERS: Degnan is slugging a state-leading 1.500 and Gonzalez ranks second at 1.333. Daniel Slominski, who had a pair of extra base hits in the season-opening 13-1 win over Canada College, ranks sixth at 1.200.
NEXT: CSM has a return match with Solano at the Fairfield campus on Saturday at 1 p.m.
