STOCKTON — With the season on the line, Delta College baseball coach Reed Peters needed a big game from sophomore pitcher Ricky Delgado.
Delgado responded for the No. 1 nationally ranked Mustangs with a near complete game four-hitter against College of the Sequoias. With the 5-1 win Saturday at Nick Cecchetti Field, Delta advanced to the second round of the California Community College Athletic Association NorCal regional playoffs.
The Giants surprised Delta with a five-run first inning to earn an 8-4 victory in Game 2 of the series to force a decisive final game.
"I wasn't ready for the season to be over," Delgado said. "It was all or nothing so I wanted to (pitch) well. It was good having (catcher Collin Theroux) behind the plate. We want to keep playing and moving on."
Delta (35-3) held a 2-1 lead over Sequoias (21-19) midway through the sixth inning of Game 3.
"We were just one hit away from having a big inning," said Peters, whose club stranded 10 runners in scoring position before breaking through in the sixth. "We hit a ton of balls hard but right at people."
Mustangs sophomore Lance Berringer went 3 for 5 with three RBI, including a two-out, two-run double down the left-field line in the sixth to give Delta breathing room with a 5-1 lead.
"I stayed deeper in the box in the second game and tried to see the ball better," Berringer said.
Berringer's clutch hit allowed Peters to leave Delgado in the game into the ninth, where he got the Giants' Blake Edmondson to ground out for the first out before he walked Joey Gallegos.
Peters took out Delgado, who left the mound with the entire infield shaking his hand.
Delta closer Matt Huss then quickly induced Sequoias sophomore Dillon Kelly to ground into a double play to end the game.
Nelson Muniz was 2 for 2 for the Mustangs with a double and an RBI, while leadoff man Nathan Easley was 2 for 4 with a run.
Jonathon Molina earned the win for the Giants earlier in the day, while Dean Kremer took the loss for Delta.
