Fresno City shows dominance with convincing win at Santa Ana Wrestling Tournament
SANTA ANA, Calif. - Defending state champion Fresno City College won individual titles in half of the 10 weight classes, had placewinners at eight weights and scored 165.5 points as the Rams took first-place honors at the Santa Ana Community College Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.
The Rams easily outdistances second-place Cerritos, which finished with 93.5 points. Sacramento City (91.5), Mt. San Antonio (86.5), Bakersfield (56.0) and host Santa Ana (51.0) were next in the standings of the tournament that had 24 scoring teams representing 13 schools.
Fresno won titles at the four lowest weights, including a fall by Isaiah Perez over Pedro Corona (Bakersfield) at 133 pounds. Brandon Betancourt (125), Aaron Mora (141) and Dylan Martinez (149) were also winners, joining teammate Marcus Macius, who was the 197 champion. Conrad Lopez (2nd) and Victor Vargas (3rd) at 165, Jay Johnson (4th) at 197, and Casey Jones (2nd) and Armando Bacenas (3rd) at 285 pounds were other placewinners for Fresno.
Runner-up Cerritos had six placewinners, including champion Wyatt Gerl at 157. Other championships were won by Anthony Lugo (Cuesta) at 165, Hector Vargas (Mt. San Antonio) at 174, Isaac Bertolotto (Sacramento City) at 184 and Brandon Sotomayor (East Los Angeles) at 285.
