Hartnell and De Anza showcase track and field talents with "duel" meet

SALINAS - The Hartnell vs De Anza "Duel" Meet is the only community college track & field dual meet held statewide and pits two perennial conference foes head-to-head during the regular season. De Anza College has dominated the dual meet winning all six previous men's editions and the Mountain Lions hold a 4-2 advantage over the Panthers on the women's side. Dual meet scoring is unique with only three scoring places receiving points and only two scorers allowed for a team. Relays are an "all-or-nothing" situation with the winning team receiving five points and the losing team none. This year,'s meet was held this week with the Harntell men winning their first dual meet in commanding fashion, 114 to 46, and the De Anza Women using the 4x400 relay to secure the win in a close 77-76 affair.
The hammer throw kicked off the meet on Thursday with the Mountain Lions taking both individual victories led by Genesis Mailangi's 43.93m winning mark and Benjamin Feldstein winning on the men's side with a toss of 47.52m to edge Hartnell's Armando Amaro at 46.31m. Mailangi also won the shot put and discus throw. New meet records were set in the women's competition by the De Anza women's relay teams in their wins. In the 4x100 relay, they were timed in 49.16 dipping under the previous mark of 49.57 set by Hartnell. The Mountain Lions also established a new meet record in the 4x400 relay running 4:07.52. Hartnell's Jenna Emeron lowered the 400mLH mark to 66.72 defeating conference leader Kaylin Mootz. Panther sophomore Roselyn Olivo won three events, the 1500m (4:59.13), 800m (2:28.08), and 3000m (10:44.70) but it wouldn't be enough to hold off the Mountain Lions as they countered with wins in the 100m (12.61) and 200m (25.96) by Marissa Windham and 400m by Sarah Morales (61.70). Mootz took the triple jump (10.58m) and long jump (5.20m) competitions.
