Mt. SAC ties conference sports record with 12th straight South Coast men's cross country crown

WALNUT - For the 12th consecutive season, Mt. San Antonio College captured the men's team title at the South Coast Conference Cross Country Championships held Friday at the Walnut campus. The streak of championships tied the conference record for all men's sports team streaks previously attained by Los Angeles City basketball (1996-2007) and Mt. SAC track and field (1997-2008).

 

Jonah Botello stretched the Mounties' streak of first-place individual finishes to 10 straight seasons as he won the 4-mile race in a time of 21 minutes, 13.5 seconds. The Mounties placed nine of the top 15 finishers (only five officially score) and scored 24 points to outpace second-place Cerritos with 38.

 

Individually, the Falcons placed second and third behind the performances of Joshua Morales (21:18.5) and Axel Rebolledo-Ynostros (21:21.4). Mt. SAC occupied the next three places, led by Derek Campos in fourth. Seventh-place Louis Santibanez of Cerritos achieved All-SCC First Team honors for the second consecutive year after placing sixth as a freshman.

 

Mt. San Antonio started its streak of titles in 2013 after Cerritos won the 2012 crown. The program has won 25 South Coast men's cross country championships overall, the first in 1984. El Camino's Teddy Kassa continues to be the answer to the trivia question: When was the last time a non-Mt. SAC runner won the SCC race? Year: 2014.

 

The top finishers from other colleges in the 7-team, 108-man field included LA Harbor's Arman Vazquez (ninth), El Camino's Nathanael Lincourt (20th), Long Beach City's Jamari Gibson (22nd), East Los Angeles' Angel Santiago (35th), and Pasadena City's Maxime Slek (41st).
