BUDAPEST, Hungary - Quincy Hall will race for the World championship in the men’s 400 meters here in Budapest on Thursday night. The former 3C2A champion for College of the Sequoias secured a “prime” lane 6 for 9:35 p.m. (local time) event (12:35 p.m. Pacific) on the new Mondo track at the National Athletics Centre.
He won his semifinal race at the World Athletics Championships on Tuesday in 44.43 seconds, defeating three of the current top nine world ranked runners, including Olympic champion and 2023 world leader (43.74) Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas (who did not finish after dueling with Hall off the final turn).
Hall ran a personal best of 44.41 seconds to make the U.S. team, placing third at last month’s national championships in Eugene, Ore. He is also expected to be on America’s 4 x 400 meter relay team, which competes on Saturday and Sunday.
The one lap title race is wide open, with world record holder Wayde Van Niekerk of South Africa running on the inside, in lane 2, after just squeaking into the final on time. The USA has two finalists. Vernon Norwood, ranked third in the world, is in lane 8.
Hall was a triple state champion for Sequoias in the 400 meters, 400 hurdles and 4 x 400 relay in 2017 and 2018, leading the Giants to the 3C2A men’s team title in 2017. He was also the 2017 USATF junior (under age 20) 400 hurdles national champion and went onto take the Pan American Junior Championship with a meet record of 49.02.
NBC has been providing live coverage on its family of channels, including USA Network, plus NBC shows on the weekend.
