CCSF football's Newman, Canyons runner Salcedo named CCCSIA September State AOTMs
Women's cross country star Danielle Salcedo of College of the Canyons (COC) and City College of San Francisco's (CCSF) starting quarterback Jack Newman have been named the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) State Athletes of the Month for September. It is the third time since the inception of the award in 2005 that a CCSF student-athlete won the accolade and sixth time Canyons has been represented with the honor.
The awards resumed after not being handed out since February, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Newman, a sophomore quarterback, has led CCSF to a flawless 4-0 record. His play has catapulted the Rams' offense to rank tops in the state highlighted by a 557.5 yards per game average in September. In all four games, he passed for over 350 yards and completed more than 15 passes.
In the opening month of play, Newman completed 99 of 140 passes (70.7%) for 1,552 yards and 15 touchdowns with a mere two interceptions. He currently leads the state in passing yards-per-game (341.8) and touchdown passes (18).
Newman closed out September action with back-to-back games of at least 25 completions, 400-plus yards passing and four touchdowns in wins over Modesto and American River. The Rams are currently ranked No. 2 overall in the CCCSIA Football poll.
Canyons' harrier Salcedo has enjoyed a stellar start to her collegiate career. The freshman phenom has won each of the first three meets she competed in this season. She snapped the tape first at the Moorpark Invitational (18:47.8), the College of the Canyons Invitational (18:58.09) and the Oxnard Invitational (18:08.6).
At the Oxnard Invitational, Salcedo set a course record and finished nearly a minute ahead of her next closest competitor. Those performances have helped COC finish second, first and second, respectively, in the team standings at those meets.
Most recently, Salcedo finished eighth overall (17:45.2) at The Master's University Invitational, standing out in a field of 145 runners primarily hailing from NAIA four-year schools.
