Velazquez, Owens tabbed 3CFCA Players of the Week
Velazquez led Cerritos to a perfect week and Owens was a workhorse in the circle for Santiago Canyon.
LOS ANGELES — Jimena Velazquez of Cerritos and Brooke Owens of Santiago Canyon have been tabbed the California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association (3CFCA) Players of the Week.
Velazquez earns 3CFCA Player of the Week honors after leading the Falcons to a perfect 5-0 week. The freshman had her most significant game of the week in a 6-0 win over No. 10 Long Beach when she posted a perfect 3-3 at the plate with four RBIs. She got the Falcons rolling in the second when she hit a two-run blast to give her squad the opening 2-0 lead. She extended the lead to 5-0 when she hit a hard shot up the middle to plate two more runners. Against El Camino, the catcher showed off her arm when she threw out a pair of runners attempting to steal second base.
Velazquez hit .500 last week with eight hits, one home run, one triple, and two doubles. She crossed the plate four times, drove in eight runs, and drew a pair of walks. The Falcons are currently on an eight-game win streak.
Owens picked up four wins in the circle to pick up 3CFCA Pitcher of the Week recognition. Owens was a workhorse for the Hawks, pitching 38 innings across five games. She highlighted the week with an 11-strikeout performance over No. 17 Antelope Valley to earn a complete game win. She opened the week pitching eight innings against Saddleback by allowing just four hits to guide Santiago Canyon to a 2-1 win. She went the distance the next two games earning a complete game win over Orange Coast and shutting out Saddleback in a second game against the Bobcats. Her lone loss of the week came in a 10-inning marathon game against Rio Hondo where she struck out eight batters in nine innings of relief.
Owens pitched four complete games with 29 strikeouts and allowed just five earned runs for a 0.92 ERA. She currently ranks fourth in the state with 150 strikeouts.
