Week #1 Players and Pitchers of the Week Announced
The California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association is pleased to announce it's Week #1 State Player and Pitcher of the Week. Sierra College freshman second baseman Syrina Vasquez and Saddleback College sophomore pitcher Nelsa Barilea earned the honors
Pitcher of the Week – Nela Barilea – Saddleback College
After a tough season opening outing, sophomore hurler Nela Barilea posted three straight quality outings, including a seven-inning no-hitter, Saddleback College's first in 28 years. After a loss to State #9 Cerritos College in their opener, the Gauchos and Barilea bounced back with a 10-1 win over State #10 El Camino College. Barilea scattered seven hits and one run over five innings of work, fanning one Warrior batter. Next came the fateful no-hitter, in a 5-0 win against San Diego Mesa, in which Barilea struck out three Olympian batters. Barilea and co then closed out the week against LA Valley College, where they posted a 6-1 victory, with Barilea improving to 3-0 after striking out three more batters, giving up just one walk, five hits, and one run. Barilea originally hails from the Phillipines where she attended Paglaum Village National High School.
Player of the Week – Syrina Vasquez – Sierra College
The freshman middle infielder from Sierra College got her collegiate career off to a fantastic start when she hit a towering shot over the centerfield fence at Bakersfield College in her first career college at bat. Vasquez didn't slow down the rest of the week, helping the Wolverines to a 5-1 record while she hit .600 in 20 at bats. Vasquez scored 10 runs in total, and has hit a pair of home runs and six doubles. She's slugging 1.200 and has posted on on-base percentage of .636. In a 11-0 win over Napa Valley College, Vasquez went 4 for 4 with a stolen base, two doubles, two runs scored, and three RBI's for the State #15 ranked team. Vasquez prepped at Oakmont High School and hails from Roseville, CA.
