SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Anay Ramirez and Kate Fox provided the offensive firepower for Riverside City College on Saturday, scoring four goals apiece to lead the Tigers to a 12-8 third-place win over San Joaquin Delta at the 2017 California Community College Athletic Association Women's Water Polo Championship at Cuesta College.
The victory gives the Tigers a 26-5 record for the season while the Mustangs finished 26-12. Hannah Hayes and Taylor Kleinert each had a pair of scores for Delta. Nikkol Weber supported Riverside's offensive punch with three goals.
The game was close most of the way. Tied at 2-2 in the first quarter, Ramirez gave Riverside the lead at the break while Natalie Lamie's goal just 21 seconds into the second quarter tied it once again. Fox, Weber and Ramirez scored consecutively in the second to put the Tigers up by three but the Mustangs answered with goals from Kleinert and Jessica Diaz in the final 41 seconds to send the game to just, 7-6, at halftime.
Sparked by two scores from Fox, Riverside outscored Delta, 4-1, in the third quarter to take an 11-7 lead going into the game's final eight minutes. Each team scored once down the stretch to provide the final score.
Dafne Garcia had a goal for the Tigers while Hannah McCarley had seven saves. Leticia Mosqueda and Maddie Wittkowske also scored for the Mustangs while goalie Tahlia Pou had seven saves.
