The Jags Return to CCCAA State Finals After 13 years
Prior to this game, Devin Aye was chosen as the Coach of the Year in the South Coast Conference. He had big shoes to fill after legendary Coach Percy Carr, who has over 900 wins, retired after 45 years of coaching at SJCC.
However, in his past three years at San José City College, Coach Devin Aye has already made two playoff appearances, and with this win against Chabot College, he has ended the Jags' 13-year drought of going to the State finals.
The Jags played Chabot College Gladiators in the third round of regionals and won 82-68. Mison Coilton led all scorers with 20 points, two threes, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Jerry Jackson added 15 points with a dunk, a three-pointer, three rebounds, and two blocks. Gavin Wilburn contributed 14 points with two dunks, two threes, two rebounds, seven assists, and one steal.
The Jags started the game well with a 6-0 run, but they lost their momentum after fouling the Gladiators on back-to-back plays. After seven unanswered points, the Gladiators took the lead 10-11. They continued to lead until the Jags again made 6 points in a row to tie the game 25-25 with 6:04 remaining in the first half. Jackson's dunk marked the turning point for the Jags as they got the lead and ended the first half up 36-31.
The Jags began the second half with a 12-5 run in the first five minutes to put them up by twelve points. They played well for the remainder of the game, ending with a fourteen-point lead over the Gladiators 82-68.
In the Gladiator's second round of regionals against Los Medanos College, Jaiden Riviera had made eight threes on sixteen attempts to lead his team and send them to this matchup against the Jags. In this game, however, the Jags contained Riviera to just three of six from beyond the arc, holding the Gladiators to under 40 percent shooting for the entire night.
The Jags play their first game in State against East Los Angeles College Huskies on Mar. 9 at 1:00 pm. Watch the live stream on https://sjccjaguars.com/JAGSLIVE
