Host Pierce Goes 4-0, Wins Annual Kickoff Classic To Begin Season
This past weekend, Pierce Women's Volleyball (4-0, 0-0) hosted its Second Annual Kickoff Classic, and for the second year in row, the Brahmas won the tournament by winning all four matches that featured 8 colleges: Pierce, Santa Barbara, Palomar, Chaffey, Mira Costa, Rio Hondo, Pasadena, and Bakersfield.
In the semis, Pierce beat a very good team in Santa Barbara (3-1, 0-0). Sophomore outside hitters, Cassidy Rosso and Whitley Doss, each had 16 kills and 13 kills respectively, and sophomore setter, Peyton Moyles, amassed 37 assists. Once again, the Brahmas won the serving battle with a season-high 10 aces.
In the finals, Pierce faced Mira Costa College (Oceanside, San Diego) for the second time in less than eight months. Last time these two faced off the Brahmas eliminated Mira Costa in the second round of regionals. The Brahmas dominated behind the service line and at the net. Pierce outhit Mira Costa 40 kills to 17 kills. Sophomore middle blocker, Shanon Volpis, had a career high 11 kills, and team captain and setter, Hayley Alvarez, hit 0.364 on the night. Freshman outside hitter, Anika Lewis, had her debut start and collected 8 kills on the night. Defensive specialists, Julia Izquierdo, Chela Maldonado, and Kammi Lovick, continue their great performances on serve receive and defense.
