Carolin Chang posted a 3-under-par 71 on Tuesday to lead Santa Barbara City College from a seven stroke deficit to the CCCAA women’s golf southern regional title by one stroke over Cuyamaca College.
Cuyamaca (634) posted a 319 on Monday and dropped down to a 315 on Tuesday but it turned out to be not enough as Santa Barbara (633) followed Monday’s 326 round with a 307 on Tuesday. In addition to Chang’s heroics, Santa Barbara’s Vanessa Watkins posted an even-par round of 74 and Danielle Picard shaved 12 strokes off her first round to finish with a 79 on the second day. Cuyamaca was paced by a pair of 77’s from Jule Loibl and Leanna Mena with Melanie Stark adding a 79.
Santa Barbara and Cuyamaca will each advance to the CCCAA State Championship which is being held Sunday and Monday, November 13-14, on the Morro Bay golf course. Irvine Valley (700) and Saddleback (716) have also qualified to represent the south at the state championship event.
Chang’s 36-hole total of 144 was four strokes under par as she easily outdistanced the field to take home individual medalist honors. Watkins was the individual runner-up at 2-over-par 150. Lichi Liu of College of the Desert (152), Loibl (153), Stark (155), and Mena (158) followed in line.
Mena would have earned the tournament’s Purple Heart award if such an award existed. She was able to handle walking the terrain of the Los Serranos Country Club courses while wearing a walking boot to protect an injured leg.
In addition to the four teams which qualified to advance to the state championship, there will also be six individuals moving on. College of the Desert’s Liu and Kabrea Rosas (159) will be joined by Alexis Tunstad of Citrus (162), Michaela Klundt of Antelope Valley (163), Brooke Logsdon of Moorpark (163), and Gwen Bates of Fullerton (165).
