MJC, Sierra, Desert, Canyons Advance To Compete For State Title
In the Northern CA women's golf regional championship Modesto Junior College (640) won the title and will be advancing to State along with Sierra (644). Butte College's Julia Peters posted a score of 151 on this 36 hole championship to claim the regional title.
Desert (665) and Canyons (684) finished 1-2 at the SoCal regional, held Nov. 10-11 at the Temecula Creek Inn Resort & Golf Course, to punch their tickets to the State Championship. Canyons moved from fourth to second on the final day of play to qualify, while Desert moved from third to first.
In the individual competition, Lexandra So of Citrus posted the lowest score in both rounds (75T/73) to finish first with a total of 148. Leleaga Meredith of Irvine Valley (155) finished second, while Rina Tomihani of Saddleback was third (157).
After two rounds, there was a tie for 13th-place between Santa Barbara's Saralisa Ortega and Canyons' Andrea Webster as both had a total score of 173. A tie-breaker based off of the final nine holes was enacted and Webster ended up capturing the last spot for the State Championship.
After day one, Irvine Valley College led all teams with a total score of 338. IVC was followed closely by Fullerton (343) and Desert (344), while Canyons (349), Palomar (377) and Santa Barbara (378) rounded out the team scoring.
After day one in the individual competition, Meredith and So were tied at 75 after the first 18 holes. Kacy Kaichi from Fullerton (76) and Rina Tomihari from Saddleback (77) were the only other players to shoot in the 70s.
The State championships will be held at Morro Bay Golf Course on November 16-17 with tee times beginning at 8:30am each day.
