ELAC Defeats Mission, 89-73, to Win Own Tournament Title
East Los Angeles (15-1) proved why their ranked #3 in Southern California in the final game of the weekend, trouncing Mission (11-8) in the finale. The Huskies lead right from the tip only briefly allowing the Saints to take a two point lead with 7:13 left in the first. East Los Angeles responded by going on a 10-0 run before building up a 10 point lead at the break. In the second half, the Huskies' lead swelled to as much 34 points midway through the second half, before settling into the 16 point victory. In the win, Olivia Ochoa scored a team high 24 points. Kyla Martin-Burnley added 22, while Jocelyne Diaz had 15 and 11 rebounds. For Mission, Celina Pagan had a game high 27 points. Paga and Ochoa were named All-Tournament selections, while Martin-Burnley was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Third Place Game: College of the Canyons 73 Los Angeles Trade-Tech College 61
Canyons (10-5) led by just two points at halftime, but opened up the second half by using an early 15-5 run to go up by double digits for the first time. Trade-Tech (7-5) would get their deficit down to eight with 9:18 to go, but the Cougars quickly pushed it back over 10 and never looked back. Trade-Tech's Latisha Brown led all scorers with 17 points adding 17 rebounds. For Canyons, Qimmah Russo had a team high 16, while Monica Friedl had 13 points, 24 rebounds, and three blocks. Friedl and LATT's Tiffany Gale were named to the All-Tournament team.
Consolation Championship Game: Saddleback College 71 College of Marin 49
Saddleback (9-8) ran away with the consolation title on Monday with the 22 point victory. Four Gaucho players finished in double figures and Saddleback forced Marin (3-7) into 29 total turnovers. Marin kept it close early, but Saddleback closed the final four minutes of the first half on a 17-2 run that put them up by 15 at the break, and double-digits for nearly the entirety of the rest of the game. Saddleback's Danielle Munson led all scorers with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Marin's Jenna May had 16 and 11. Munson was named to the All-Tournament team.
