Colts Pull Off Upset Over No.2 SJCC
The upsets keep coming in the Northern California Regional, with the men's basketball teams at Canada College and Foothill College both advancing Wednesday night into the final round before the state championships.
No. 9 Canada stunned No. 2 San Jose City College on the road with a 67-58 victory. It's been a return to form for the Colts (23-6), who lost four out of five before winning the regular-season finale against Foothill.
"It's a testament to our guys and the work they put in and their ability to be relentless," Canada coach Mike Reynoso said. "We know we kind of slipped and didn't take the opportunity to win conference that was there, but coming back we knew we were a team that could contend for a state title."
SJCC (26-4) trailed by 15 with about nine minutes left in the first half, then turned to a 2-3 zone and pressed Canada full court.
"We took long 3's out of their press and then we took quick shots in the zone," Reynoso said. "And long shots equal long rebounds, so they got a little momentum going in transition and that's what kind of fueled their comeback."
Still ahead 36-33 at halftime, the Colts relied on their game plan to hold the lead the rest of the way. Point guard Crisshawn Clark led the way with 24 points and eight rebounds.
"I can't say enough about how he's matured in the last two weeks," Reynoso said.
Power forward Manny Martin had a monster game with 19 points, 14 rebounds, seven blocks and four assists. Canada travels to No. 3 Marin (26-3) on Saturday.
