Fresno City captures tournament title
James O'Neal dropped 14 of his team-high 23 points in the second half to power Fresno City College to a 73-61 victory over Mira Costa to win the El Camino Tournament of Champions on Saturday in Torrance.
The Rams (7-2) tied the score 32-32 on Brandon Shelton's layup at the halftime buzzer. After the break, Fresno City erupted for a 12-1 run to pull away from the Spartans (3-3) and win its first tournament championship of the season.
O'Neal, named tournament MVP, finished 8-for-10 shooting from the field and added a game-high nine rebounds. Ryan Swain added 12 points and five boards and Dejon Burdeaux scored 11 to go with a team-high four assists for the Rams.
Buddha Boyd had a game-high 27 points for Mira Costa.
• Sequoias lost to Rio Hondo 72-63 in the tournament's fifth-place game. … Reedley lost its third game in a row, falling 84-49 to San Jose in a nonconference game.
