VC Beach Volleyball Finishes the Regular Season With a Split

The Ventura College women's beach volleyball team finished their first year as a competitive sport by splitting a pair of matches. Ventura dropped the opener to the day against host Grossmont by a score of 5-0. They responded with a 5-0 win over Rio Hondo. Cassandra Lacanilao and Cristal Gonzalezwon three sets on the day, as did Kierra Joyner andBraxton Jessie.

VC opened the day with a rough start as they fall to Grossmont out of San Diego by a score of 5-0. The Pirates dropped the No. 1, 2 and 3 matches in straight sets, but their No. 4 and 5 teams responded to win one set and force each of their matches to go three full sets. Lacanilao and Gonzalez picked up a 21-19 win in their second set. Joyner and Jessie were 21-19 winners in the opening set before dropping the final two sets of the match.
Ventura 5 Rio Hondo 0
Despite their rough opening match the Pirates responded in the second match of the day with a dominant 5-0 win over Rio Hondo. Ventura won four of the five matches in straight sets and won the final match in three sets. Paris Dosch and Brittney Mukhar were winners in straight sets at No. 2 while Sarah Veloz and Tori Hiott claimed their No. 1 contest in three sets. The VC No. 3 team of Sierra Joyner and Cassidy Simental claimed a straight sets win to help the Pirates to a shutout win in their final regular season contest.
Ventura (9-4, 6-2) has now completed the regular season portion of their first season. In the Western State Conference the Pirates dropped just two matches and will return to the sand for the Western State Conference championships on Friday Apr. 29. First up though the VC team will participate in the WSC individual play-in tournament on Wednesday Apr. 27.
