Mt. SAC Football Comeback Falls Short; Loses in OT to SD Mesa, 33-30

(Covina, CA) Trailing by 10 points in the fourth quarter, the Mt. SAC Football Team tied the game at the end of regulation, but fell in overtime, 33-30, to visiting San Diego Mesa.

Mt. SAC (6-3, 3-1) trailed, 27-17 entering the fourth quarter, but tied the game on a 27-yard field goal by Gabriel Dunkle and a touchdown with just :35 left from quarterback Zach Rangel (18 for 33, 225 yds., TD, 2 Int.) to fullback Yamar Woods and send the game into overtime.

The Mounties took a 30-27 lead in the OT, but Mesa won on a game-ending TD pass in the National Conference Central Division game this past Saturday (Nov. 9) at Covina District Field.

Mt. SAC running back Rachaad White had his second 200-yard-plus game of the season, with a game-high 202 yards and two touchdowns. White passed the 1,000-yard mark for the season for a nine-game total of 1,157 yards and 10 TD's.

Mounties wide receiver Jonathan Schofield led all receivers with five receptions for 162 yards. Rangel connected with eight different receivers in the game.

The Mt. SAC defense, led by an interception from linebacker Connor Helsius, gave the Mounties great field position on the first drive of the game at the Mesa nine-yard line. 

Two plays later, White ran in a six-yard touchdown for the 7-0 lead with only 2:11 elapsed in the game.

The Olympians took a 14-7 lead on two scores in the quarter, before Dunkle connected for the second of his three field goals, a 29-yarder early in the second quarter, to tral, 14-10.

Mesa grabbed a two-touchdown lead, 24-10, before White raced to a 70-yard touchdown, to trail, 24-17 at the half.

Each team split the uprights for a field goal, for the 27-20 score, setting the stage for the final game-tying score by the Mounties and overtime.

The Mounties defense accounted for four sacks, one each by Colin Keanu (-7 yds), Tyrin Brooks (-18 yds.), Tamaaulelei Ma'alona (-8 yds.) and Eucharise J. Brown (-1 yd.).

Mt. SAC has one game remaining in the regular season.  The Mounties will host host Fullerton College on Saturday (Nov. 16) at 6:00 pm in a game that will have conference championship, play-off and bowl game implications.
