SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The SBCC women's soccer team earned its first Western State Conference win of 2021 on Saturday night at La Playa Stadium, defeating Cuesta 2-0 behind a pair of first half goals.

The Vaqueros have yet to win or lose two straight this season, now at 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Cuesta falls to 2-5 overall, 1-1 in conference.

Santa Barbara kept the offensive pressure on high all night, posting a season-high 25 shots. Sophomore forward Monica Pizano found the back of the net with one of the first attempts of the day, scoring in the second minute off an assist by Alexia Cabral.

It was the first assist of the year for Cabral, who made a mark on the scoresheet herself late in the first half. The freshman forward doubled the Vaqueros lead in the 37th minute, with Pizano returning the favor on the assist.

The dangerous Pizano now leads SBCC with five goals on the year while also sharing a three-way tie for the team-lead with three assists.

While the Vaqueros consistently threatened in the attacking half, their defense only allowed just one shot on goal for Cuesta which was saved by goalkeeper Analea Pule. It was the second straight home shutout for SBCC.

Next Friday, Oct. 8, the Vaqueros will hit the road again for a 4:00 p.m. conference match at LA Pierce.
