El Cajon — A day of community college women's volleyball at Grossmont led to a pair of victories for the 16th ranked Griffins who now turn their attention to Pacific Coast Athletic Conference matches that start on Friday.

In game one of the day, the Griffins (5-3) were pushed to the limit as they battled the 23rd ranked Mt. San Jacinto to a hard fought five-set victory, 25-16, 25-15, 14-25, 28-30, 15-8. Madi Bogle led the way with 19 kills and Allison Carter had 14 kills. Mercedes Lopez had 24 assists in the match and shared the setting duties with Chelsee Turner who had 15 assists. Laureno Dumo (21) from the libero spot and Brooke Miller (12) from the defensive specialist had double-digit digs.

Grossmont had a handle on the first two sets, then lost a little bit of momentum as MSJC (5-6) took set three 25-14 after being up at one point 16-5.

Set four was one of those sets that could be an epic match by itself. Grossmont jumped out to a 5-2 early lead. The Eagles fought with an 11-3 run for a 20-14 lead. The Griffins had their own 11-4 run to a 24-all tie. Grossmont got a point to get to match point. MSJC defended and got to set point themselves. Grossmont then went on a 2-0 run to have match point number two. MSJC would fight back to get to their own second set point. GC would tie it up at 28-all. The Eagles would then go on a 2-0 run to take the set and tie the match up to force the deciding fifth set.

The Green and Gold jumped on the Eagles and led 8-4 at the switch. They would finish it off with a 7-4 run that had them go to match point four.

In match two of the day against the Lasers of Irvine Valley (4-3), it was total domination from Grossmont.

The Griffins would hit .375 for the match. Aly Guise put down 11 kills on 17 swings. Lopez would add another 30 assists, out of 32 for the entire squad. Lauren Dermo had 12 digs to lead all players.

The match was an open and shut case as the Griffins won with set scores 25-19, 25-17 and 25-23.

The 11th ranked Irvine Valley hung in during the first two sets. However, they were so tardy for the third set, that they were issued two yellow cards for delay of match, resulting in a point for Grossmont before the set even began.

Grossmont will open Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play on Friday, Sept. 16 against Palomar (4-2) for a match at the Griffin Arena at 6:00 p.m. The Comets will be coming off a victory over Golden West that went the distance.
