Third Quarter Outburst Sinks SBVC

The San Bernardino Valley College women's basketball team went into the locker room Saturday only down by two points to visiting MiraCosta College.

But during that 15-minute break, the Spartans' offense woke up and outscored the Wolverines 29-8 in the third quarter as MiraCosta cruised in the final 10 minutes to a 76-47 victory.

The Wolverines had the pressure on MiraCosta from the start, ending the first up by a point as Candee Evans made a layup with eight seconds left in the quarter. Both teams battled in the second quarter, with the Wolverines not able to get enough shots to fall, trailing 25-23 after 20 minutes.

But the third quarter, the Spartans started to catch fire from the field. They made 62.5 percent of their shots - while holding SBVC to less than 18 percent - to open a 54-31 lead.

The Wolverines were led by DeAnne Pinota, who had 15 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Destiny Alexander added 12 points and eight rebounds for SBVC.

MiraCosta's Chynna Cochran was the game's leading scorer, pouring in 21 points, leading four players who scored in double figures. Savannah Beasley added 17, while Kiva Reyes had 11 and Julia Iman had 10.
