Women's Basketball Coasts to 80-59 Victory Over Golden West

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress women's basketball team (11-8, 4-1 OEC) defeated the Golden West Rustlers (9-6, 0-3 OEC) in commanding fashion, 80-59.

The Chargers were led by Jaylene Oviedo with 17 points off the bench. Thao Truong had a strong performance, finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Cypress opened the game on a 12-4 run with help from their defensive intensity. A lay-up from Malia Goldsmith extended the Charger lead to 14 as the first quarter came to a close, 23-9. The second quarter went back and forth for both teams, but the sharp-shooting Chargers kept them ahead throughout. Back-to-back threes from Tanya Carbajal and Thao Truong gave the Chargers a 20 point lead with four minutes to go, finishing the half up 40-21. Cypress continued the momentum into the second half, outscoring the Rustlers 21-8 in the third quarter. Golden West caught fire in the 4th quarter shooting 10-15 from three point range, but it was too little too late and the Chargers were able to finish with a comfortable victory, 80-59.

UP NEXT: The Chargers look to continue their momentum as they hit the road to take on Irvine Valley College Friday, January 28 at 7PM.
