Men's Basketball: Pirates come up short in loss at COS

Porterville College's Carlos Angel nailed a three-pointer with 16 seconds left to play to tie up the game before College of the Sequoias' Kentrey Bynum's free throw with 12 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner as the Pirates came up just short in the 76-75 defeat in Visalia on Saturday.

The Pirates had their two-game winning streak snapped as their record dropped to 5-12 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Porterville trailed 44-41 at halftime before the Pirates rallied late to take a 70-69 lead after a pair of free throws by Malik McCowan with 4:34 to play. Sequoias would retake the lead and a dunk by Bynum gave the Giants a 75-72 advantage with 30 seconds left. Angel nailed the three-pointer, knotting the game before Bynum was fouled after an offensive rebounds.

Bynum made one of two free throws and after a defensive rebound by McCowan, the Pirates missed a pair of potential game-winning shots over the final seconds.

McCowan led Porterville with 23 points, six rebounds, six assists, and four steals while Angel scored 13 points. Alonso Valle had eight points off the bench and Da'Morea Green contributed seven points and eight boards.

Porterville will look to get back on track on Wednesday (Jan. 18) when the Pirates host Columbia College in a 5 p.m. CVC game.
