COD Women’s Soccer rolls past the Arabs, 7-0

COD (2-1) got out in front early and never looked back as Jasmine Castillo and Ashley Murguia both had a pair of goals before halftime, the Roadrunners would roll at home, past the Imperial Valley Arabs (0-3), 7-0.

Sophomore forward Jasmine Castillo (Indio Shadow Hills) fresh off of her being named an IEAC Player of The Week, would get the scoring started in the second minute. A shot attempt by freshman midfielder Zaynah Cortez (Palm Springs H.S.) was ricocheted off of the keeper and the ball ended up in front of Castillo who poked the ball past the Arabs keeper to give the home crowd on San Pablo Avenue something to cheer about.

In the 8th minute, sophomore midfielder Ashley Murguia (Indio H.S.) would grab the Roadrunners second goal on an assist by freshman forward Yisel Ybarra (Thermal Desert Mirage) giving Desert a 2-0 lead.

In the 24th minute, Murgia received a pass from freshman defender Alondra Rubi Villarreal (Thermal Desert Mirage) about 45 yards out and rifled it past the keeper, to give Desert their third goal and her second of the afternoon.

Castillo would get her second goal of the half in the 25th minute on an assist from Cortez, as Castillo made a slide step to the left and pushed her shot past the Imperial Valley keeper, to give the Roadrunners a 4-0 lead.

In the 43rd minute, Desert would snag a fifth goal on a cross from the left of the goal box by freshman midfielder Jasmine Hernandez (Thermal Coachella Valley) and then the ball was pounded into the back of the net by freshman defender Rubi Borjas (Thermal Coachella Valley).

Freshman goal keeper Jessica Uribe (Indio Shadow Hills) did not have to do much to get her first clean sheet of 2021, she faced no shots the entire game.

The second half was very similar to the first half, although Desert collected a few more corner kick opportunities.

In the 53rd minute, sophomore midfielder Isabel Alvarez (Indio Shadow Hills) was grabbed and pulled down in the goal box and a penalty kick was awarded to the Roadrunners. Sophomore defender Anaya Guerrero (La Quinta H.S.) converted the PK opportunity to give Desert a 6-0 lead.

Three minutes later, freshman midfielder Monserrath Bedolla-Guzman (Thermal Coachella Valley) lofted a beautiful corner kick, which Cortez chested into the back of the net for the Roadrunners seventh goal.

The next game for Desert is on Tuesday, September 7 at the Cypress Chargers. The Roadrunners and Chargers have never faced one another in a head-to-head match-up before in program history. These teams had scrimmages against one another prior to the beginning of the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
