Hartnell wins NorCal cross country title in back-to-back fashion for fourth time; Julia Gonzalez is medalist for Diablo Valley
SALINAS - Hartnell College repeated as the CCCAA Northern California Women's Cross Country champion with a dominant performance on its home course at Toro Park on Friday. It was the fourth time in school history that the program won back-to-back titles, a feat also achieved in 2002-2003, 2009-2010, and 2014-2015.
The Panther women tallied 29 points to record the second-lowest team score in championship history since the large and small college divisions were combined in 1984. For the Panthers, Daniela Salazar placed second overall in 18:25 to earn her second all-region honor after moving up one spot from 2018. Fellow sophomore Nerina Campos crossed in fifth place in 19:09, repeating her all-region honor after placing 14th as a freshman.
In between, Shantal Martinez placed third in 18:41 and freshman Valeria Gomez-Lozano was fourth in 18:48, giving the Panther women four all-region runners in the top five overall. Freshmen Faith Mora was 22nd in 20:01, Mariah Changco 29th and Joanna Macias 32nd, giving the Panthers four returners in the top 32 for next year's edition.
Diablo Valley College sophomore Julia Gonzalez became just the fifth woman ever to repeat her regional title, joining Alyssa Block (Sequoias) in 2016-2017, Yesenia Silva (Sequoias) 2013-2014, Trina Cos (Santa Rosa) 2001-2002, and Jen Schindler (ARC) 1997-1998, Gonzalez won in 18:22, lowering the modified Toro Park course record by five seconds from her Norcal Preview Meet Performance. Sierra College was second as a team and earned its second consecutive regional trophy. Newcomer Clovis Community College earned its first regional trophy in third.
