ELAC's Aceves wins state title
Aceves, who covered the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 42.08 seconds, passed Silva with 50 meters left in the race. With 100 meters left, she dropped back a couple of steps before recovering and going on to win.
"Our plan was just to stay behind her and our push at the end, and our strategy paid off," ELAC coach Louis Ramirez said.
Silva, the Northern California champion, was timed in 17:45.73.
Third place went to Glendale sophomore Elizabeth Nelson, timed in 18:01.87.
Aceves' time was tied for 12th best in course history.
She became the first ELAC women to win a state title since Sylvia Mosqueda accomplished the feat in 1984. Mosqueda set the course record of 17:06 that year.
L.A. Trade Tech sophomore Evelyn De la Luz was 10th in 18:41.91.
Cerritos' Patricia Hurley was 29th in 19:19.39.
Orange Coast won the team title with 73 points, well ahead of runner-up Glendale, which had 126. Cerritos was sixth and Trade Tech seventh.
In the men's race, Jonathan Bazinet of Cerritos took sixth in 20:26.97 over the four-mile course.Cerritos took fourth as a team.
American River won the team title.
