Feather River takes over #1 spot in CCCWVCA State Top 25 Rankings
The Feather River College women's volleyball team vaulted to No. 1 in the 2022 CCCWVCA State Top 25 Rankings behind four victories in winning the 16-team, San Joaquin Delta Classic held Sept. 9-10. The Golden Eagles (12-1) scored 4-set wins over #15 Hartnell and host #3 Delta and then soundly swept #6 San Mateo in the championship match, 25-7, 25-16, 25-11, as they ran their winning streak to 10 matches.
Undefeated Ventura (8-0) remains the class of SoCal and moved up to #2 as the Pirates defeated #13 Orange Coast in four sets last week. Delta (7-1) jumped six spots to #3 after a shocking sweep over previous #1 American River (now #5) and a strong effort in the Feather River loss.
At #4, San Diego Mesa (9-1) has won seven in a row, including impressive sweeps over #10 Cypress, #14 College of the Canyons, and #23 Mt. San Jacinto. The Olympians (9-1) also downed #11 Irvine Valley in four.
American River (7-2) saw its 7-match win string broken with losses to Delta and San Mateo in 5. CSM (5-3) also beat now #7 Fresno City and finished in second place at the Delta Classic.
Fresno (7-2) narrowly escaped an upset by #T25 Cabrillo in winning a 5-set thriller at 15-13 in the fifth. At #8, Pasadena City (8-2) scored a big, 4-set victory over #9 Moorpark and has won six in a row. Moorpark (4-1) later earned sweeps over #16 Grossmont and #20 Mt. San Antonio.
Cypress (8-2) rounded out the Top 10 after winning seven straight, then losing to Mesa, but rebounding with an epic 5-set win over Canyons, taking the fifth in extra points, 18-16.
Irvine Valley (4-2), rallied from 2-0 down to beat #12 MiraCosta while the Spartans (6-3) had a wild week of marathon matches, beating El Camino (19-17 in the 5th) and Canyons besides their loss to the Lasers.
Orange Coast (#13, 5-1) kept it close v. Ventura, only outscored by nine total points, then went on to sweep Glendale and College of the Desert.
In all, the Orange Empire Conference is represented by six teams on this week's rankings while the Big 8 has five teams.
Only six teams remain undefeated in the state, but only three appear on the Top 25 in Ventura, #22 Santa Ana (7-0) and #T25 Saddleback (6-0).
