Cuesta W-Volleyball Coach Nystrom wins 300th Match
Few coaches in California Community Colleges are a bigger part of their program than Cuesta women's volleyball head coach Roche Nystrom, who notched her 300th career coaching win in the Cougars sweep over Citrus on Oct. 7.
Nystrom, who attended Coast Union High School in Cambria, began her career at Cuesta College as a student-athlete and helped lead the Cougars to the institution's first state small schools title in 1979 in only the program's fourth year of existence.
Nystrom went on to play college ball at Biola University, but was back on the bench as an assistant at the end of her playing career to help Coach Hugh Gerhardt lead the Cougars to Cuesta's only state team titles (in any sport) with back-to-back crowns in 1985 and 1986.
In 1993, Nystrom took over the helm as the program's fourth head coach and along with her time as a player and an assistant she has been with the Cougars for over 500 of the program's 600-plus victories. She directed the Cougars to six conference titles, 11 playoff berths and, a pair of CCCAA State Tournaments appearances.
